Club History

FLTC was formed in 1884 on the grounds of the R Martello tower. At one time the tower itself was nearly used as the tennis clubhouse but the remains now form part of the walls of the nearby Bartlet Hospital.

In the 1920’s the club enjoyed close association with the ‘finest hotel on the East coast’ the Felix Hotel (now Harvest House). Luxury accommodation was provided with tea, cakes, bread and butter brought by waiters to the tennis players and spectators.

Many of the world’s finest players have graced these courts, including the world champion Fred Perry and more recently Tim Henman, Amelie Mauresmo and Andy Murray.

If you wish to know more about the history of the club take a look at the centenary brochure.

The Club is set in beautiful landscaped grounds, forming a major part of the local conservation area, high above the quietest stretch of the seafront promenade. There are 9 grass courts available during the summer season and 9 floodlit courts (3 acrylic, 3 macadam and 3 artificial grass) for play throughout the year and available for hire. All the courts are maintained in excellent condition by our full time groundsman.

The spacious clubhouse was rebuilt in 2002 and features a large, airy main room over-looking the grass courts and an upstairs bar with an extra seating area that has views over all the grounds. Standing on the balcony you can watch play on the courts, see several historic buildings and enjoy the view of the sea. There are pool and table tennis tables and of course showers and changing rooms and a modern kitchen. The clubhouse is used for social events and is available for hire.

The club has a number of regular sessions for members. There is a regular club session for all members on Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm. On Sunday mornings at 10am, there is fun, social tennis, especially suitable for new members or the less serious player. There are also other regular events - please ask for details. As well as this, the club has mens, ladies and mixed teams in the Suffolk League, there is an extensive coaching programme for adults and juniors. Plus there are also a number of social events. All of these are listed in the calendar.
